Wyman Bishop, Jr., aged 95, passed away at Vickers Personal Care Home in Mathiston, Mississippi with his wife of thirty-eight years holding his hand. Mr. Bishop was married to Frances Chambers Garavelli Bishop.
Mr. Bishop was born on September 2, 1924 to the late Wyman Bishop, Sr. and Jennie Hodges Bishop. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp at the age of 17 and served during World War II in China for eighteen months until the war ended. After five years he returned home as an honorably discharged Sargeant in the United States Marine Corp. He attended Wood Junior College and continued his education at Mississippi State University, participating in the ROTC program. He was promoted to First Lieutenant in the United States Army Reserves. While attending Wood Junior College he met and married Juanita Rodgers from Pontotoc County. They lived in Maben and had two children. After his wife passed away, Mr. Bishop met Fran Garavelli at a flea market in Memphis, Tennessee. They were married for thirty-eight years until his death.
Mr. Bishop worked at numerous jobs throughout his life. He began working at Swift's Dairy Company in West Point, then worked at JCPenney in retail. His work also included selling Shelter Insurance in Maben, Mississippi, working for the Mississippi Highway Department, and Mississippi Housing Authority. After retirement, he said that he kept himself busy "helping out old people" in the community. Mr. Bishop was honored to be included in the Veterans Honor flight to Washington, D. C. in 2012.
Mr. Bishop is survived by his wife, Frances Chambers Garavelli Bishop; one daughter Glenda Ruth (Bill) Bishop Palmer of Maben, Mississippi; two stepsons, James Ashton, Sr., of Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina and Dr. John Garavelli of Dover, Delaware; one stepdaughter, Sylvia Gay Garavelli Bowen of Water Valley, Mississippi; five grandchildren, Brad (Beth) Palmer, John R. (Lauren) Palmer, Johnathan Bishop, James Ashton, Jr., and Tanya (Mike) Bowen Thweet; five great grandchildren, Kaiden Palmer, Karolina Palmer, Taylor Ashton, James Ashton, and Robyn (Gerald) McCarty; two great-great grandchildren, Mason McCarty and Cooper McCarty; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Bishop is preceded in death by his parents, Wyman and Jennie Hodges Bishop; his first wife, Juanita Rodgers Bishop; one son, Kenneth Wyman Bishop; one brother, Rupert Bishop; and one sister, Lucille Bishop Fulgham.
A memorial service for Mr. Wyman Bishop, Jr. will be Saturday, February 29, 2020 at Center Grove Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. with visitation prior to the service from 10:30 – 11:00 a.m. Dr. Chad Moore will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to French Camp Academy, Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, St. Jude's Children's Hospital, or Center Grove Youth Fund. Wise Reed Funeral Home assisted with the services.
