Shirley Wayne Shurden

April 15, 1936 – May 17, 2023

Shirley Wayne Shurden, passed away at Diversicare Living Center in Eupora, MS, on May 16, 2023. She was born in Choctaw County on April 15, 1936, to Dowell Nathaniel McClain and Maudie Modena Smith McClain.

Shirley was a caregiver at Starkville Manor Nursing Home until retirement. She married Bruce Archie Shurden on December 27, 1969, and set up housekeeping at Self Creek for the next 53 years. During the past 53 years of marriage, Bruce and Shirley were never apart. Even after her retirement, Bruce would take Shirley to Walmart to sit and crochet or cross stitch until he finished work. She never met a stranger. The family says that even when they went to a waiting room full of strangers, she knew the names of each and every one by the time she left. Shirley was a faithful churchgoer offering her help any way she could.

Shirley Shurden is survived by her husband Bruce Shurden; a sister, Jimmie Morgan of Louisville, MS and a sister in love, Alice Hinson of Starkville, MS.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Dowell and Maudie McClain and her son, Bruce Anthony "Tony" Shurden.

The visitation for Mrs. Shurden will be Friday, May 19, at 12:00 PM at Wise Reed Funeral Home with services to follow at 1:00 PM. Graveside services will also be held in Wise Reed Funeral Home Chapel. Brother Dean Butler will officiate all services.

Wise Reed Funeral Home will oversee all arrangements.
