Obituary

Douglas Lavelle Ballard, 65, a beloved son, father, grandfather and friend passed away at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo, MS on June 24th surrounded by his family.

Born on July 5th, 1960, in Mathiston, MS, Lavelle attended Mathiston High School and Wood Jr. College before joining the Army. Lavelle was known for his kindness, his down-to-earth personality, and his love for his family, friends, and dogs (both big and small).

Lavelle worked for over 30 years as a welder in the West Point/Mathiston area and took great pride in what he did. In his retirement, you would find him resting at home with his beloved dog, Sherman, watching M.A.S.H, The Andy Griffith Show, or Gunsmoke. He dearly loved his children and grandchildren and didn’t let a day go by without speaking to them.

Lavelle is survived by his mother, Glenda Reed Ballard of Mathiston; one daughter Leah Welborn (Andrew) of Pensacola, FL; two sons Jeremey Ballard (Kara) of Pensacola, FL and Christopher “Critter” Ballard of Mathiston and four grandchildren; Rowan, Herron, Lochlyn and Spencer. He is also survived by one brother, Larry Ballard of Columbus and two sisters, Shelia Guidi of Dahlonega, GA and Gail Shurden of Mathiston.

Lavelle is preceded in death by his father, Herbert Lavelle Ballard and one brother, Lamar Ballard.

A visitation will be held Sunday June 28, 2026, at Wise Reed Funeral Home from 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. with a funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. He will be laid to rest at Spring Valley Cemetery in Mathiston.
