Obituary for James Eugene Whatley

James Eugene “Pete” Whatley, Sr.
April 22,1941 – December 2, 2022
Eupora, Mississippi

James Eugene Whatley, Sr, better known as Pete Whatley, age 81, passed away on Friday, December 2, 2022, at the Baptist Hospital in Booneville, MS. He was born on April 22, 1941, in Carroll County, Mississippi, to Chesley and Lena Whatley, and married Martha Jean Trigg on December 1, 1966.
Pete lived in Mississippi all his life. He was of the Church of God faith, but in later years, attended Clarkson Baptist Church with his very special friend, Martha Ward. He was an employee of the Webster County School System bus shop for 18 years. Pete was what is known as a man’s man, enjoying hunting, fishing, car racing (Mart Martin was king of drivers to him), wrestling, the outdoors and tinkering. He loved fishing most of all and was a huge fishing pole collector coming in at 100 plus collected with two brand new poles in his truck at his passing. His family will remember him as a loving father and grandfather.
Pete is survived by three sons, Jimmy Whatley Bunch (Mary), Timothy McLendon (Tammy), and Herbert McLendon (Tina); two daughters, Gail Wilkinson (Chris) and Martha Lester (Dale), thirteen grandchildren and 19 great- grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his father, Chesley E. Whatley; his mother, Lena Whatley Hales; wife, Martha Jean Trigg Whatley; son, James Eugene Whatley, Jr, and two sisters, Clara McBride, and Shirley Johnston.
There will be a visitation held at Wise Reed Funeral Home on Sunday, December 4, at 3:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M.
Funeral services will be held Monday, December 5, at 2:00 P.M. with graveside and burial following at Sapa Cemetery in the Sapa Community.
