Obituary for Daniel Gayden "Hot" Hughes

Daniel Gayden “Hot” Hughes
February 7, 1937 – January 25, 2021
Walthall, Mississippi

Daniel Gayden “Hot” Hughes, aged 83, passed away on January 25, 2021, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Eupora, Mississippi. He was born on February 7, 1937, to Daniel Smith and Mary Sue Carroll Hughes in Walthall, Mississippi.
Descended from one of the early families in Walthall, Mississippi, Gayden “Hot” Hughes was the grandson of J.N. Carroll, a circuit clerk in Walthall. He dearly loved his Walthall community and never desired to venture too far away. He enjoyed playing and watching sports; and because of his athletic ability in high school, he was nicknamed “Hot”. He was married for 54 years to the late Lounette Perkins Hughes. He was a lifetime member of Walthall Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He worked at Wells Lamont in Eupora, Mississippi, and also raised cattle. During his retirement years, he enjoyed gardening, especially tomatoes. His family laughingly says he loved tomatoes more than sunshine. Most days he could be found sitting in his swing on the patio talking with his friends and neighbors and enjoying the beautiful scenery surrounding him.
He is survived by one son, Andy (Patricia) Hughes of Southaven, Mississippi; two daughters, Sharon (Gregg) Smith of Columbus, Mississippi, and Melanie Hughes of Madison, Mississippi; and two sisters, Sue (Dean) Hall of Eupora, Mississippi, and Lady Otis “Tootsie” Doolittle of the Cadaretta Community.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Daniel Smith and Mary Sue Carroll Hughes, and his wife, Lounette Perkins Hughes.
A visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Walthall Baptist Church on Thursday, January 28, 2021. The funeral will follow at 11 :00 a.m. The family requests that all safety precautions be observed. All attending will be required to wear a mask and temperature will be checked at the door. Burial will be at Sapa Cemetery in Eupora, Mississippi. Wise Reed Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
